Former 1,000-yard receiver attempting NFL comeback

A former Pro Bowl wide receiver is attempting a comeback this season after he took a year off from playing.

Wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, who played for the Las Vegas Raiders from 2019-2023, met with his former team on Friday, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Renfrow also had a visit with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday and is hoping to land with a team.

The Raiders drafted Renfrow in the fifth round out of Clemson in 2019. The two-time college national champion had a breakout season in 2021, when he caught 103 passes for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. Renfrow was selected to the Pro Bowl that year.

Renfrow then had a down year in 2022, largely because of injuries. He suffered a concussion early in the year and was then sidelined for several games with an oblique injury. Renfrow finished the year with 36 receptions for 330 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns.

Though he vowed to prove that his uninspiring 2022 season was a fluke, Renfrow was even less productive the following year. He had 25 catches for 255 yards while appearing in all 17 games in 2023.

Renfrow was released shortly after the start of free agency last offseason. He did not wind up signing with another team.

The Raiders currently have Jakobi Meyers as their top wide receiver, so they have a need at the position. If Renfrow is still in football shape, his familiarity with the franchise could help him get his old job back.
