Jack Del Rio’s time as Oakland Raiders head coach did not last long.
Del Rio was informed after Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that he will not be back as the team’s head coach.
Del Rio finished his third season as the team’s head coach. After going 7-9 in his first year, the team jumped to 12-4 last season and reached the playoffs. They entered 2017 with high expectations but completely flopped, going just 6-10 while disappointing across the board.
The firing of Del Rio means rumors about Jon Gruden joining the franchise will only heat up. On Saturday night, an ESPN report said the Raiders were going to pursue Gruden with a monstrous offer that could include an ownership stake.
It seems unlikely that the team would fire Del Rio without having confidence that they would be getting Gruden as a replacement.
