Jason Garrett could save his job with NFC title game appearance?

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Dallas Cowboys over the past few weeks, and it seems like only a matter of time before they are searching for a new head coach. However, they are still in a prime position to make the playoffs, and that could be the first step toward Jason Garrett keeping his job.

There have been various reports about how far Garrett would need to lead the Cowboys into the postseason in order to get an extension from the team, and the latest from Ian Rapoport of sounds a bit more reasonable. According to the NFL Media insider, Dallas may keep Garrett if they advance to the NFC Championship Game.

That is consistent with what Troy Aikman suggested earlier in the season, and he has strong ties to the Cowboys organization. Another report claimed Garrett will be out unless Dallas wins the Super Bowl, but that seems overly dramatic. It’s almost impossible to envision a team parting ways with a coach that just won a conference championship.

For any of that to matter, the Cowboys need to drastically improve their play. They have looked uninspired during their current three-game losing streak, and that may have a lot to do with the way Jerry Jones has publicly bashed Garrett and his coaching staff. All that said, the Cowboys remain on top in the NFC East with a 6-7 record. They don’t exactly have to shock the world in order to make the playoffs, and we have seen teams get hot at the right moment plenty of times.

If Dallas does move on from Garrett, they may already have their sights set on one specific head coaching candidate.
