Jay Gruden ‘very concerned’ about Josh Doctson’s Achilles

Washington Redskins wide receiver Josh Doctson is off to a slow start in his rookie season, thanks largely to an Achilles injury, and now the team is beginning to worry.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said on Wednesday that he is “very concerned” about Doctson, who was forced to sit out Week 3 against the New York Giants. Fortunately, Gruden also added that tests on Doctson have shown no further damage and that it’s more a matter of pain management, per John Keim of ESPN.

Doctson, 23, was drafted by the Redskins in the first round last April. The Achilles issue cost him the entire training camp and preseason, but he was able to return in time for the start of the regular season, recording two catches for 66 yards in his first two games. The injury apparently flared up on him again however, setting back his rookie year development even further.

Even when healthy, Doctson is firmly behind DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, and Jamison Crowder (and maybe even Gruden himself) on Washington’s wide receiver depth chart. As such, he’ll be lucky to play any sort of substantive role for the Redskins this season.
