Jeffrey Lurie: Philadelphia will push for Super Bowl if New York goes well

Eagles snowThe Super Bowl has traditionally been held in a city with warm weather, or at least been played in a dome when it’s been in a cold city. But that’s about to change next year when the Super Bowl will be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey — an outdoor stadium which serves as the home field for the New York Jets and Giants.

Philadelphia Eagles owner/chairman Jeffrey Lurie says if next year’s Super Bowl goes well, he will push for Philadelphia to host one.

“I will. Yes, I will. If it’s a success. New York will help us,” Lurie told reporters Monday when asked if Philly would push to host a big game.

Lurie made his comments at the NFL meetings in Phoenix and said he is fond of snow games because of the way he grew up in Boston.

“Growing up in Boston, I went to more great games in snow conditions,” Lurie said, via the Philadelphia Daily News. “Some of the most memorable games I’ve ever been to were very difficult and wonderful conditions. I would have no fear of it snowing — as long as there’s no public safety issue that day, I think it would be great if it’s snowing a bit.”

The first 15 Super Bowls were held in California, Florida, Louisiana or Texas. The streak was interrupted when Detroit hosted Super Bowl XVI, which was played at the Pontiac Silverdome. Detroit hosted another Super Bowl in 2005, while Minneapolis and Indianapolis are the other two cold-weather cities to host. The rest have been in warm-weather cities. That tradition may be changing quickly if things go well next year.
