Report: Jerry Jones ‘on a mission’ to impede Roger Goodell contract
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell still looks more likely than not to get a hefty contract extension, but Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is desperately trying to hinder the process.
An ownership source told the MMQB’s Peter King that Jones is “on a mission” to try to at least reduce Goodell’s compensation in a new deal stemming from grievances over Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension and players not being forced to stand for the national anthem.
“Jerry [Jones] is on a mission,” the source said. “I’ve been in the league a long time, and this is as passionate and vocal as I’ve seen him on anything. He wants players to stand, and he obviously wants to do something on Roger’s contract.”
Jones reportedly believes Goodell has become too aggressive in suspending players, and is particularly aggrieved over Elliott’s. He is also said to be aghast that Goodell will not force players to stand during the national anthem.
Jones wants to make Goodell’s contract incentive-based, and reportedly would not be going as far as he has if he didn’t believe he could achieve at least some success in that regard.
Once a staunch backer of the commissioner, Jones has made it clear that he’s not happy with the deal offered to Goodell. It will be interesting to see if he makes any progress toward getting those terms changed — for now, it doesn’t look like he has the support.
