Jets discussed possibility of signing Ray Rice

Ray Rice

Ray Rice has not played in the NFL since 2013, but there have been multiple teams who have discussed the possibility of giving him another shot. The New York Jets are one of them.

In an interview with the “Boomer and Carton Show” on WFAN Friday morning, Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan was asked if he would ever consider signing Rice.

“I think we’ve talked about that at various points in time,” Maccagnan said, per Darryl Slater of NJ.com. “I would probably say that that would be one that I would probably have to sit down and talk with Todd [Bowles, the Jets’ head coach] and Woody [Johnson, the Jets’ owner]. But I don’t foresee that at this point in time.”

Unlike some other NFL teams, the Jets are not in desperate need of a running back — as long as they re-sign Chris Ivory this offseason. Ivory has emerged as one of the most underrated running backs in the NFL over the past two seasons, though he hinted he was frustrated with the team after New York’s season-ending loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Rice has said on numerous occasions that he is still hoping to play for an NFL team, but he turned 29 on Friday. There have been rumors about teams having internal discussions about the former Baltimore Ravens star, but his age combined with the disturbing domestic violence history have left his future very much in doubt.
