The New York Jets appear to be intent on conducting an extensive search for their new head coach, and a former Super Bowl champion quarterback is on their list of candidates.
The Jets have requested permission to interview Brian Griese for their head coach position, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Griese is currently the quarterbacks coach with the San Francisco 49ers.
Griese, 49, was an NFL quarterback for 11 seasons from 1998-2008. He was drafted in the third round by the Denver Broncos in 1998 and won a Super Bowl as a backup to John Elway. Griese became Denver’s starting quarterback after Elway retired and made the Pro Bowl in 2000.
After spending his first five seasons with the Broncos, Griese played for the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears. He was mostly a backup throughout his career.
Griese does not have extensive coaching experience. He has only been the quarterbacks coach of the 49ers since 2022, but he has helped develop seventh-round pick Brock Purdy into one of the top QBs in the NFL. That is likely the main reason he is drawing head coach interest from the Jets and potentially some other teams.
