New York Jets legend Nick Mangold is battling a significant health issue, and he is turning to fans for help.
Mangold, who was a star center for the Jets from 2006-2016, revealed on Tuesday that he is in need of a kidney transplant. The 41-year-old said he was diagnosed with a genetic defect in 2006 that had led to chronic kidney disease, and his kidney is failing sooner than expected.
Mangold said there are no members of his family who are eligible to donate a kidney. He shared a link for fans to follow if there is anyone with type O blood who is willing to donate.
“This isn’t an easy message to share, but I want to be open about what’s been happening with me and my health,” Mangold wrote.
“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. After a rough summer, I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time.
“Unfortunately, I do not have any family able to donate at this time, so this is why I’m reaching out to you, our NY Jets and Ohio State communities. I am in need of a kidney donor with type O blood. Mangold is one of the most popular players in Jets franchise history. His seven Pro Bowl selections are second for most all time with the team behind only fellow former offensive lineman Winston Hill, who had eight. Mangold was also named a First-team All-Pro twice. The former first-round pick out of Ohio State was inducted into the New York Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022.
Given his popularity, Mangold will likely receive plenty of support from fans who are willing to donate.
