Joe Theismann permits Dwayne Haskins to wear his No. 7 with Washington

The Washington Redskins do not issue Joe Theismann’s No. 7 anymore, but the iconic quarterback has granted an exception to the team’s new signal-caller.

Theismann spoke with new Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins and granted him permission to wear the number, he said Wednesday.

“I just got off the phone with Dwayne just a little while ago, and I told him it was okay to wear No. 7,” Theismann told Grant & Danny, via Josh Luckenbaugh of 106.7 The Fan. “I’ve given him permission. Not that I feel like I needed to, but he was respectful enough to ask.

“We had a really nice conversation. It’s important to him. And hey, I want the kid to be successful. He doesn’t need to worry about, ‘Well, I wish I could’ve worn a different jersey. I wish I could’ve worn a number.'”

Haskins wore No. 7 at Ohio State and clearly wanted it in the NFL, and was given his wish. Wearing the number in Washington will bring a lot of expectations, but judging by the quarterback’s reaction to being passed over by a division rival, he has a chip on his shoulder and will welcome those high hopes.
