The Cleveland Browns have finally decided to name Johnny Manziel their starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.
Jay Glazer of FOX Sports was the first to report the news.
Browns coach Mike Pettine had made it a point to stick with veteran Josh McCown as his starter and made it clear on numerous occasions that Manziel was only starting because McCown was hurt. However, Manziel had his best game as a pro last weekend in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, completing 33-of-45 passes for 372 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
The Browns lost to Pittsburgh and are not going to make the playoffs. This is as good a time as ever for them to starting figuring out whether Manziel is their quarterback of the future. Also, Pettine choosing to go with Manziel could be an indication that the recent report we heard about the coach’s job status is accurate.
At 2-8, Cleveland would be accomplishing nothing by sticking with a 36-year-old quarterback. Manziel needs reps.
