Chicago Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen offered a hint into why the team’s offense has not worked in 2024.

Allen was asked about the Bears’ decision to fire offensive coordinator Matt Waldron this week following the team’s third consecutive loss. The veteran wide receiver pointed to a lack of accountability with players, adding that Waldron was simply “too nice of a guy” and let too much go during training camp.

“I would say just probably he was too nice of a guy,” Allen said. “I think during OTAs, training camp, he kind of fell into a trap of letting things go, not holding people accountable. Obviously those things lead to a slippery slope.”

Considering how important the development of quarterback Caleb Williams is to the Bears’ future, this hire sounds like it was doomed from the start. One report even suggests that some Bears veterans have lost faith in Williams, which is probably an even bigger concern at this point. For whatever it is worth, head coach Matt Eberflus has said publicly that benching Williams is not a consideration.

Each loss and poor performance makes it more likely that Eberflus takes the fall for what is quickly becoming a lost season. The Bears will need to get things right going forward, because they clearly have not served their rookie quarterback well so far.
