Report: Veteran players pushing for Bears to make 1 more change
The Chicago Bears fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron on Tuesday, and some veteran players reportedly want the team to make another big change ahead of Week 11.
After the news surfaced that Waldron is out in Chicago, Marc Silverman of ESPN Chicago’s “Waddle and Silvy” show reported that Bears players went to head coach Matt Eberflus and general manager Ryan Poles and asked them to make the coaching change. Silverman says there are also some veteran players who want the team to bench Caleb Williams in favor of Tyson Bagent.
After talking to a few people with knowledge of the situation, players went to Matt Eberflus & Ryan Poles asking them to make a change at offensive coordinator.
There have also been a few veteran players requesting Bagent starts. https://t.co/h3QSrhZjQ1— Silvy (@WaddleandSilvy) November 12, 2024
Williams has hit a wall over the last three weeks. The Bears have gone 23 consecutive possessions without scoring a touchdown, and Williams has not thrown a touchdown pass since Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Not surprisingly, that was the last time Chicago won a game.
Eberflus ruled out making a quarterback change following the Bears’ embarrassing 19-3 home loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. That is hardly a surprise, as the No. 1 overall pick is not solely to blame for Chicago’s struggles.
Bagent appeared in five games last season and threw 3 touchdown passes compared to 6 interceptions. It is highly unlikely that he would be much of an upgrade for the 4-5 Bears behind their suspect offensive line.
If the Bears do make another major change during the second half of the season, Eberflus would probably be the next to go, not Williams.
