Kenneth Walker had quite a debut — and a postgame quote — for his new team.
In his first game wearing Kansas City Chiefs threads on Monday, the reigning Super Bowl Most Valuable Player torched the Denver Broncos for 173 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, helping the AFC West team come away with a 31-10 win at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
In the postgame press conference, the star running back gave the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce their flowers for the leadership he saw them display when he arrived on the team.
The former Michigan State Spartans star also thanked the team for being so welcoming to him.
“They’ve accepted me with open arms, and I appreciate them for that,” Walker said, via NFL on ESPN.
The 25-year-old Walker showed right away what makes him such a game-changer for Kansas City’s offense, as he relentlessly lit up Denver’s defense against the run. Additionally, he had a receiving touchdown for a multi-TD game.
Walker gives the Chiefs a dangerous weapon out of the backfield, and based on his Week 1 performance, it looks like Kansas City got a steal when they signed him to a 3-year contract worth as much as $45 million.
Walker, who won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks last season, can find even more success on the ground in Week 2.
Coming up next for the Chiefs is a date at their home with the Indianapolis Colts, who gave up 144 rushing yards and three touchdowns to Baltimore Ravens star running back Derrick Henry in Week 1.
