A new report suggests that San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan’s car crash was so serious that he nearly lost an eye over it.
Chris Simms revealed on “PFT Live” Monday that Shanahan’s wife Mandy reached out and sent him photos of Shanahan’s injuries shortly after the accident happened. Simms suggested the injuries were so severe that Shanahan had come very close to losing his right eye.
“She sent us some pictures right off the bat, and it was like, oh my gosh,” Simms said. “You’ve seen the injury report, the broken ribs, 40 stitches to the face, the broken nose, the broken left hand, of course the bad concussion. But when you first see it, and it’s fresh, and some of the cuts are still wide open, it’s jarring. He was this close to maybe losing his right eye, the scar is so big.”

The Niners announced Sunday that Shanahan had been injured in a July 14 car crash. He will be taking on limited duties during the start of training camp, but the team appears optimistic that he will be able to coach the team as usual in Week 1 of the regular season.
Shanahan, 46, is widely regarded as one of the league’s top coaches. He has been the Niners’ head coach since 2017 and has posted a regular season record of 82-67. He has reached the playoffs in five of his nine seasons in charge, including two Super Bowl appearances and two other appearances in the NFC Championship game.
