San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered significant injuries in an offseason car accident that will limit his activity at the start of training camp.
The 49ers revealed Saturday that Shanahan suffered “non-life-threatening injuries” in a car accident last week. He will take part in camp on a limited basis as he recovers from those injuries, with assistant head coach Chris Foerster taking on a larger role until he is healed.

Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs, his hand, needed over 40 stiches in his face and suffered a severe concussion as a result of the July 14 accident, according to Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner of ESPN. He collided with an SUV and spend most of the day in the hospital before being released.
Palo Alto police confirmed that no one was cited for the accident, both drivers were cooperative, and drugs and alcohol were not involved in the crash.
Shanahan, 46, is widely regarded as one of the league’s top coaches. He has been the Niners’ head coach since 2017 and has posted a regular season record of 82-67. He has reached the playoffs in five of his nine seasons in charge, including two Super Bowl appearances and two other appearances in the NFC Championship game.
