Lions lose after penalty on 2-point conversion for failure to report as eligible

Taylor Decker catches the ball

The Detroit Lions lost to the Dallas Cowboys 20-19 in their Week 17 clash after an absolutely wild sequence in the final minute at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The Lions turned the ball over with two minutes left down 17-13. Dallas kicked a field goal after that to go up 20-13, giving the ball back to Detroit with 1:41 remaining.

The Lions wasted no time moving the ball and even scored a touchdown with 23 seconds left to make it 20-19. Unsurprisingly, they went for two, and they got it — so we thought.

But there was a big problem — the officials threw a delayed flag and called a foul on the Lions because they said Taylor Decker did not report as eligible.

The Lions had three linemen plus a tight end to the right of center Frank Ragnow and just two linemen to the left. They ran a play-action fake to the right and Jared Goff threw back to the left to tackle Decker, who was open in the end zone for the catch.

It looked like Detroit had a 21-20 lead until that call was made. After the penalty, the Lions decided to attempt the 2-pointer again, but Dallas was offsides, so that moved Detroit closer to the end zone. Unfortunately for the Lions, Jared Goff threw low and incomplete on the team’s final 2-point try. They lost 20-19, and Lions fans are simmering after being hosed by the officials yet again in Dallas.
