New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers explained his spirited sideline exchange with coach Brian Daboll during Sunday’s game.

Nabers claimed he was just trying to fire up his team and add some energy by seemingly clashing with his coach. The second-year wide receiver downplayed the incident, characterizing it as “two competitive people going at it.”

“I mean, I said I was going to speak up, when it was time for me to speak up, but just trying to get guys going, trying to get everything going,” Nabers said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “I felt like we were lacking out there. The energy wasn’t right. So, I took it upon myself to try to boost people up. It’s two competitive people going at it. He wants to win; I want to win. I feel like that’s the reason he got me over here is because of how me and him are just alike. So, it was two people just going at it, we trying to get the same outcome.”

Nabers does not want to make too much out of this, but it certainly did not look like he was just trying to fire up his teammates (video here). In all likelihood, things were not going well for the Giants, and Nabers and Daboll had a rather spirited exchange about that fact.

The star wide receiver wound up making five catches for 71 yards in a 21-6 defeat.

Obviously, Nabers will not be pleased with that result. Considering he delivered a pretty scathing verdict on his team at times last year, he might get even more agitated if things do not turn around in the weeks to come.
