Mark Sanchez has been released from the hospital roughly a week after he was stabbed, and the former NFL quarterback on Sunday made his first public statement since the incident.

Sanchez was booked into the Marion County Jail in Indianapolis, Ind., on Sunday. Max Lewis of FOX 59 captured video of Sanchez entering and leaving the jail after having his mug shot and fingerprints taken. When Sanchez came out of the building, he gave a brief statement to reporters.

A teary-eyed Sanchez said he is “focused on my recovery” and thanked the doctors from Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, which is where the 38-year-old was treated. Sanchez said the surgeon who operated on him “saved my life.”

Sanchez said he could not take any questions from the media.

Sanchez was stabbed multiple times early Saturday morning during an altercation in Indianapolis, Ind. He had been in the city to call the Week 5 game between the Colts and Las Vegas Raiders. Police have said they have evidence proving Sanchez was the aggressor in the incident and that a 69-year-old truck driver stabbed the former NFL quarterback in self-defense.

Sanchez was arrested hours after the incident and is facing multiple charges, including at least one felony that carries a prison sentence. Sanchez has also been sued by the man who stabbed him.

It is unclear when or if Sanchez will return to calling NFL games as an analyst for FOX. The network has been taking it week-to-week with replacements for Sanchez.
