Matt LaFleur costs Packers points with questionable decision before halftime

Matt LaFleur

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur made a questionable decision to close out the first half of his team’s game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, and it ended up costing the team three points.

The Packers were awarded a 1st-and-goal from the 1-yard line following a pass interference penalty in the end zone. With only two seconds remaining in the half and a 14-10 lead, the logical choice seemed like it would have been to take the points and a 17-10 lead into halftime. But LaFleur felt like gambling, and Jamaal Williams was stuffed way behind the line of scrimmage by Gerald McCoy.

What made the decision even more puzzling was that Green Bay was set to receive in the second half. Why risk giving the Panthers momentum in that situation rather than taking the field goal and trying to put together another scoring drive to start the third quarter?

LaFleur probably figured he could break Carolina’s spirits before halftime if the Packers scored, but it backfired. The Panthers have to feel pretty good about the result considering it was a terrible roughing the passer call that put Green Bay in position to score to begin with.
