Mike Evans expresses support for Bucs kicker after game-winning FG miss

Mike Evans Bucs

Mike Evans had his best game of the season go to waste on Sunday, but he is not about to point any fingers.

After rookie kicker Matt Gay missed a 34-yard field goal in the closing seconds that would have won the game against the New York Giants, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver expressed support for his teammate.

“I mean, he’s a really good kicker with a really strong leg,” Evans said, per PewterReport. “It’s football, those things happen. It happens to every kicker in their career at least once. We’re not upset with him by any means. The offense has to do more. We had an 18-point lead. We had our way in the first half, but you gotta play the second half.”

Gay, who was drafted in the fifth round this year, also missed two extra points on the day. Evans, meanwhile, posted a monster line with eight catches for 190 yards and three touchdowns, so his reaction is especially commendable after such a massive effort still resulted in defeat.

Fortunately for Gay, the majority of the blame does not seem to be falling on him, but rather on his head coach.
