Mike Zimmer gives vague reason for holding Teddy Bridgewater out of preseason game

Teddy Bridgewater

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer raised some eyebrows by sitting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater during Thursday’s preseason game at Seattle. What’s more, he wouldn’t tell anyone why he did it.

Zimmer told reporters after the game that it wasn’t disciplinary, but that was as close as anyone was getting to a specific reason.

“Because I sat him,” Zimmer responded when asked why Bridgewater didn’t play, via Matt Vensel of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

When pressed for a reason for the benching, Zimmer wasn’t budging.

“Because I wanted to.”

Though the questions continued, Zimmer simply stood his ground.

“Teddy Bridgewater is the nicest kid in the world. There is no disciplinary action ever with Teddy,” Zimmer added. “It had nothing to do with discipline and it had to do with my decision.

“It was my decision. How many times are we going to go through this? It was my decision. Good enough?”

Perhaps Zimmer was just worried about the intensity of Minnesota’s opponents, the Seahawks. The fear of an opponent taking a preseason game too seriously was one reason that another team sat their quarterback recently. Whatever the case, Zimmer isn’t going to give us any more details. It doesn’t, however, seem as if Bridgewater is in the doghouse.
