The San Francisco 49ers were dealt a major blow on Sunday, as linebacker NaVorro Bowman suffered a torn Achilles tendon and will miss the remainder of the 2016 season.
The team confirmed on Monday that the injury was as bad as initially feared when Bowman went down in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Bowman’s injury was of the non-contact variety, which is typically a bad sign.
You can see a video of the play here.
Bowman has been the heart and soul of the Niners’ defense since Patrick Willis retired, and you could even argue that he was better than Willis in the final couple seasons they played together. The 28-year-old has never missed a game in his five-year career.
The 49ers rank dead last this season in team rushing defense, allowing 140.5 yards per game. Things could get even worse in that department without Bowman.
