The Green Bay Packers have made a very unexpected choice with their new defensive coordinator hire.
Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley is leaving to become Green Bay’s defensive coordinator, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN. Hafley just finished his fourth season at Boston College, where he has gone 22-26 overall.

Few would have seen this coming, and it is quite rare for a head coach at a Power 5 program to leave for an NFL coordinator job. Hafley is no doubt qualified, having spent seven years as an NFL defensive backs coach before his Boston College stint. This will, however, be his first NFL defensive coordinator position.
The move leaves Boston College in need of a new coach, though Hafley’s 12-22 record in ACC play may have had him on the hot seat in the near future anyway. The Eagles are coming off a 7-6 season and a win in the Fenway Bowl.
