Packers coach backs kicker Mason Crosby after disastrous game

Mason Crosby

Mason Crosby had one of the worst games we’ve ever seen from a place kicker.

In the Green Bay Packers’ 31-23 defeat to the Detroit Lions last weekend, Crosby went 1-for-5, missing four field goals and an extra point. The 13 points he left on the table were enough to cover the margin of defeat. Prior to the awful game, Crosby was 10/11 on field goals and 8/9 on extra points.

Despite the showing, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy believes Crosby will be able to get back to normal.

“You talk about hitting a bump in the hit, I mean he hit a boulder for God sakes,” McCarthy said via ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. “But he’s the same guy. He’s working at it, and you root for a guy like Mason because he exemplifies what a Green Bay Packer is. His work ethic and once again, he’ll rely on his instincts and don’t over evaluate, trust himself, trust the other two guys in the battery and he’ll be back to normal.”

The show of support from McCarthy is encouraging, but everyone likely recognizes that Crosby is on thin ice. 11 successful seasons with the Packers has bought Crosby a second chance. Green Bay likely won’t be so forgiving if he costs them a second time.
