Report: Panthers to make Norv Turner offensive coordinator

The Carolina Panthers are reportedly close to naming Norv Turner their new offensive coordinator.

ESPN’s David Newton reported Wednesday that Turner was in Charlotte to finalize a deal. His son Scott is also reportedly set to be named the team’s quarterbacks coach. They will be charged with helping Cam Newton, whose career has taken a step back since his MVP season in 2015.

It seems likely that the Panthers fired offensive coordinator Mike Shula with Turner in mind, given how quickly things came about. Coach Ron Rivera also has an extensive history with Turner, having served as his defensive coordinator when Turner was head coach of the San Diego Chargers.

Turner hasn’t coached at any level since 2016, when he abruptly resigned as the offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings seven games into the season.
