The Kansas City Chiefs lost their best wide receiver by way of a freak play on Sunday, and it is one that Patrick Mahomes wishes he could have back.
Rashee Rice was carted off the field after he suffered a knee injury during the first quarter of Kansas City’s 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. The injury occurred when Patrick Mahomes took out Rice’s right leg while the quarterback was trying to make a tackle after throwing an interception to Chargers defensive back Kristian Fulton. Rice actually made a great hustle play and knocked the ball out of Fulton’s hands after the interception, but the fumble went out of bounds and the Chargers retained possession.
Mahomes acknowledged after the game that Rice would never have gotten hurt had Mahomes not thrown a pick.
“Rashee really made a good play. I was trying to make a play and rolled up on him. If I don’t turn the ball over that never happens,” Mahomes told reporters on Sunday. “All we can do is pray that the MRI’s and X-ray’s are better than it looked.”
Unfortunately, the tests are not expected to reveal good news. The belief is that Rice suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.
Rice entered Week 4 as the Chiefs’ leading receiver with 24 catches for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns on the season. Kansas City has already been without Hollywood Brown, who is not expected to play this year after he injured his shoulder in the preseason. Mahomes will have his work cut out for him going forward.
