Philip Rivers affirms his desire to play in 2020

Philip Rivers

It doesn’t sound like Philip Rivers has any attention to hang them up anytime soon.

The 38-year-old Los Angeles Chargers quarterback affirmed his desire to keep playing, though he did add that he will have to consider his family when making a final decision.

“I’m capable enough physically and mentally, there’s no question,” Rivers said Sunday, via Eric D. Williams of ESPN. “Yes, I do want to play football. I do, and that’s how I feel deep down as I stand here.

“There’s a lot of factors. There’s a personal side and family side to mine. I’m going to have a daughter in college as well, too. So time is ticking, and I’ve got a sixth-grade son that I’ve got to get ready to coach at some point, so there’s all kinds of factors.

“But I know I can still do it, and I know I can still do it at a high enough level for us to win. I have not done it well enough this year, but I still do love to play, and love to lead these guys and this team. It’s been an array of things that have compounded, to keep us from winning enough games to advance into the tournament.”

Rivers surpassed 4,000 yards as usual this season, but his touchdowns are down to 21 and his interceptions rose to 18. He’s also had to contend with the fact that the Chargers are basically playing 16 road games a year these days, which can certainly take its toll. Still, all things considered, he sounds like he’s decided that he wants to keep going.
