Rams try to defend Jeff Fisher not knowing Patriots running backs

Jeff Fisher Rams

The Los Angeles Rams insist head coach Jeff Fisher is not clueless about the backfield personnel of his next opponent, though the team’s argument is not very convincing.

On Wednesday, Fisher made headlines during a conference call with the New England media when he was asked to discuss the Patriots’ running backs. He began by praising LeGarrette Blount, who has had a fantastic season to this point, but the comments Fisher made after that seemed a bit off.

“I’ve been impressed with Brandon and what he’s done out of the backfield,” Fisher told reporters, per Hayden Bird of Boston.com. “You’ve got to deal with him, in addition to Danny. You’ve got playmakers all around, so we have to play sound defense.”

Brandon who? Brandon Bolden, who is primarily a special teams player and has carried the ball just once this season? And which Danny are you referring to, coach? Danny Amendola the wide receiver, or Danny Woodhead, who has not played for the Patriots since 2012.

The general public drew the conclusion — and rightfully so — that Fisher has a lot of studying to do before Sunday’s game. On Thursday, a Rams spokesman tried to defend the coach.

“Coach Fisher was referring to Danny Amendola, who played for the Rams,” the spokesman told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “He was talking about some of the threats they have.”

And, yes, Fisher is impressed with Bolden, “not so much about production, but the different ways they line him up,” according to the spokesman.

Riiiiigggghhht.

Fisher seems to be digging himself into a hole lately. His Rams were just blown out 49-21 and are expected to get stomped again in New England. In addition, Fisher seems to be having some issues with a Rams legend and Hall of Famer. If the guy doesn’t even know who the impact players are for his upcoming opponent, it’s no wonder he loses more than he wins.
