The Washington Commanders certainly need a quarterback. To get one, they may try to emulate the path that made the Los Angeles Rams so successful.
Commanders coach Ron Rivera admitted that the Rams had taken advantage of Detroit’s willingness to move on from Matthew Stafford last offseason. Rivera added that the Commanders are very open to emulating that strategy.
“I think what Detroit did [with Stafford] was masterful,” Rivera told Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. “Why? Because of the picks they’re going to have. They’re building for the future. They went out and they got a new head coach a year ago and said, ‘Hey, let’s see what we can build into.’ So they let Matthew go and gave him an opportunity. Now, look where he is.
“Matthew, a veteran guy, has gotten his opportunity and shown people what he’s capable of. Let’s see what happens the rest of the way. Would we love to have something like that? Yeah. If the right situation is available, we want to get in on it.”
Reports earlier in the offseason suggested that Washington wants to target a veteran. There certainly appears to be some level of belief that there is a solid core in place, and the Commanders need a quarterback to unlock its potential.
At least one veteran quarterback will be available on the trade market this offseason. That might be precisely what the Commanders are looking for.
