The Washington Commanders had high hopes for quarterback Sam Howell before the start of the season, but the team is now 3-4 after an underwhelming showing on offense Sunday. That led coach Ron Rivera to hint that Howell’s starting job may not be totally secure.
Rivera was asked Monday if he planned to stick with Howell for the remainder of the season. The coach said he planned to, but left the door open to a change, saying that he “can’t predict the future.”
Ron Rivera, on if he's sticking with Sam Howell for the remainder of the season: "I'm committed to him and we'll see how things go, but I can't predict the future."

The Commanders do have an experienced veteran backup in Jacoby Brissett if they want to go that route. The upside would appear quite limited either way, as the team does not look good enough to go to the playoffs and Brissett would not be a long-term solution.
Howell has thrown nine touchdown passes and seven interceptions in six games while being sacked a league-worst 40 times. Rivera was a huge fan of his coming into the season, but things seem to be different now.
