Report: Some in 49ers locker room want Christian Ponder to take over starting QB job
Some in the San Francisco 49ers reportedly want to see a new quarterback – but they don’t want that quarterback to be Colin Kaepernick.
According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, some members of the 49ers offense want to see Christian Ponder leapfrog both Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert and become the team’s starting quarterback.
“Ponder is the best option for quarterback on the roster,” one locker room source told Maiocco.
While Kaepernick would seem to be the obvious choice if the team made a change, some in the locker room reportedly feel he hasn’t displayed the necessary commitment to take the job back. This is evidenced by the fact that he hasn’t been able to put weight back on after his shoulder injury, as well as the fact that Gabbert has outperformed him in practices.
Coach Chip Kelly said the 49ers would reevaluate after falling to 1-4 on Thursday night. Many people took that to mean Kaepernick might get his shot, but it could mean Ponder gets a look, too.
