Steelers sign ex-Super Bowl champion WR

The Los Angeles Rams-Pittsburgh Steelers pipeline continues to go strong.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on Monday that the Steelers are signing veteran wide receiver Robert Woods in free agency. Woods is reportedly getting a one-year, $2 million deal from Pittsburgh.

Now 33 years old, Woods is a few years removed from his peak with the Rams, whom he played for from 2017-21. That included a Super Bowl victory in the 2021 season and two straight years of 1,000 or more yards receiving from 2018-19.

But Woods notably tore his ACL towards the end of 2021 and was traded to the Tennessee Titans in 2022. Woods then signed with the Houston Texans before the 2023 campaign but had just 629 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown combined over his two seasons with them. That included 203 yards and zero touchdowns for the Texans last season.

As such, it is obviously unrealistic for the Steelers to expect to get a pre-injury-like resurgence from Woods. But Bobby Trees is a very well-loved teammate and should help make things a little bit easier for Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, or whoever Pittsburgh’s starting QB ends up being next season.

The Steelers have also been making a habit of signing wide receivers from that Super Bowl-winning Rams team. They had former Rams WR Van Jefferson on their roster last season (though Jefferson has since signed with the Titans), and they still have another one of Woods’ old Rams teammates around for him to reunite with as well.
