Terrell Owens: Donovan McNabb was jealous of how Philly embraced me

Donovan-McNabb-Terrell-OwensTerrell Owens and Donovan McNabb did not exactly get along like Fred and Barney during their time together with the Philadelphia Eagles. Had they won a Super Bowl, the relationship may have been different and not seemed like such a power struggle.

During an interview with Angelo Cataldi on the 94WIP Morning Show Tuesday, Owens shed some light on what went wrong between him and his former teammate. Basically, he believes McNabb was jealous of him.

“My thing is, I had nothing but respect and love for Donovan [McNabb],” Owens said, according to CBS Philly. “I think he felt kind of slighted at how honestly, at probably the way the team, well actually the city, just embraced me while I was there considering when he got drafted they [fans] didn’t want him there and things like that.”

TO said he had his own “celebrity” status before joining the Eagles, which may have fueled McNabb’s resentment.

“I could still hear those fans chanting my name, ‘TO, TO, TO, TO’. I can hear that like it was yesterday,” Owens said. “And then, again, playoffs — main questions they asked him was, ‘Are you guys gonna win, can you guys win without T.O?’ That had nothing, really — it did have something to do with me, but I wasn’t asking those questions. I think he kind of got upset and annoyed at the fact that he felt his skills were kind of being undermined as one of the reasons why they got to the Super Bowl.”

As recently as June 2012, McNabb admitted that TO gave the Eagles a boost but said he believes the team could have made the Super Bowl without him. Owens was also critical of the contract McNabb got from the Washington Redskins back in 2010, and he ended up being right about that.

I certainly wouldn’t say Owens and McNabb have the same hatred for each other that Michael Crabtree and Richard Sherman have, but they obviously aren’t going to hang out and crack a beer together. Had they won a championship, things would likely be much different.
