Tom Brady hoping to get stitches in hand removed this week

Tom Brady

Tom Brady proved on Sunday that the injury to his throwing hand was not enough to prevent him from leading his team to a victory, and the Patriots quarterback expects the nasty cut he sustained to be a thing of the past by the end of the week.

In his weekly appearance on WEEI’s “Kirk & Callahan Show” Monday, Brady confirmed that he suffered a laceration to his right hand during last Wednesday’s practice that required 12 stitches. He said he expects the stitches to come out this week.

“I think hopefully sometime this week and at that point, again, I was fortunate not to tear any ligaments or anything like that,” Brady said. “There [were] no broken bones. That was obviously the best news I could ever hear based on what you think it could be and we found out that it wasn’t. After an unlucky injury, it turned out to be a lot of good luck that it wasn’t more serious than it was.”

Brady said reports about his hand hitting a teammate’s helmet were inaccurate, which almost makes the injury sound like it was even more frightening.

“We ran into each other and my thumb just got bent back. It wasn’t his helmet or anything. Just kind of got bent back,” he explained. “That is why I felt it was a lot worse. The doctors went in and checked it out and we did things just to kind of check on everything and fortunately, there wasn’t any damage that normally comes associated with that. I think we were very lucky.”

If Brady’s hand was gashed open like that from bending back, he’s obviously extremely fortunate he didn’t tear a ligament. While he did not say which teammate he ran into, reports have indicated it was running back Rex Burkhead.

Brady completed 26 of 38 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns against one of the NFL’s best defenses, so everything worked out for New England. While the performance despite his injury adds yet another impressive feat to Brady’s remarkable legacy, Bill Belichick was quick to remind reporters that the ailment wasn’t a life or death situation.
