Report: Tony Romo felt ‘let down’ by Jason Garrett sticking with Dak Prescott
Tony Romo has said very little about his former coach since he announced his decision to retire from football, and that is likely not a coincidence.
During his conference call on Tuesday announcing he will be joining CBS to begin his broadcasting career, Romo did not mention Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett once. That may have been a coincidence, but Garrett’s name was again avoided in an interview with 105.3 The Fan’s “Ben and Skin Show” a day later. Is Romo saying a lot by saying nothing at all?
A source told Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Romo felt “let down” after Garrett made the decision to stick with Dak Prescott last year and not give Romo a chance to earn his starting job back. It seems obvious that Garrett’s difficult call has stuck with Romo, who has had no problem gushing about Cowboys owner Jerry Jones this week.
“I’ve never had a better boss, owner or mentor than Jerry Jones,” Romo said Tuesday. “I’d be remiss if I went through this entire conversation and never mentioned how much he’s meant to me and how much he’ll mean to me going forward because he’ll always be in my life, and I’ll always be in his.”
It was more of the same on Wednesday.
“I really wish people would get a chance to see his heart and the way he just loves this football team, loves his family and just loves the people that have done right by him,” Romo told 105.3 The Fan. “There’s not a more loyal guy that you’ll ever meet. He’s always been that way and he’s always going to be that way.”
Garrett ultimately made the right decision. He would have been insane to bench Prescott with the way the team was playing, even if he coached Romo for a decade. You can understand why Romo felt slighted, but Prescott gave Garrett no choice.
Of course, Romo could have also been bothered by the comments Garrett recently made about the 36-year-old quarterback’s health. Perhaps the two will bury the hatchet when enough time passes.
