Tony Romo plans to have surgery to implant a protective plate in his collarbone in the coming weeks as a preventative measure.
Romo confirmed via text message that he will likely have the procedure within the next two weeks or so, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer.
The hope is that the insertion of the plate would prevent further injury to Romo’s collarbone. Romo has broken his collarbone three times since 2010 and twice in 2015 alone.
It was originally reported that Romo’s surgical procedure would involve shaving down the collarbone, but Romo and those involved in the decisionmaking process have apparently opted for the protective plate instead.
Taking preventative measures seems wise here, especially since the team feared a third broken collarbone for the season down the stretch. The Cowboys are reportedly considering taking preventative measures of their own with regards to the quarterback position, too.
