Troy Aikman: I’d take Tony Romo over any QB in playoffs

Tony-Romo

Troy Aikman believes the Dallas Cowboys have an advantage over every team remaining in the playoffs at the quarterback position.

Before the first wave of divisional round playoff games on Saturday, Aikman was asked which quarterback he would choose if he needed a QB to make one play this postseason.

“I’ll tell you, right now, from what I’ve seen this year — just talking about this year – I’d probably take (Tony) Romo,” Aikman told Tom Pelissero of USA TODAY Sports. “I’ve seen him make too many plays when he’s had to make them this year and he’s made them.”

Aikman spent his entire career with the Cowboys and won three Super Bowls with the team, so you could argue that he is biased. That said, Romo posted a career-high 113.2 passer rating this season and played at an incredibly high level. He also made timely plays in a win over the Detroit Lions last week, throwing for 293 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

“I think a lot of it has been (Romo’s) maturity,” Aikman said. “I think he’s learned that there’s a lot to the position, and that every possession doesn’t require you having to make a big play or something spectacular. He’s really done a nice job of that all season long. He hasn’t forced the ball down the field for big plays. He’s been willing to take what has been there.”

Romo’s toughness is underrated. The Cowboys have brought out the best in him by protecting him with outstanding offensive line play this season, but is he the best QB remaining in the playoffs? Romo over Tom Brady? Romo over Aaron Rodgers? Romo over Peyton Manning? Romo over Russell Wilson? No, thank you.

If Romo can avoid making mistakes like this, the Cowboys — who are 8-0 on the road this season — have a legitimate chance to beat the Packers in Green Bay.
