Victor Cruz: Teams Aren’t Afraid to Throw on Darrelle Revis Anymore

With the Jets playing the Giants Saturday, and both teams on the border of missing the playoffs, the New York media is in full hype-machine mode. They’re doing everything possible to stir up a controversy. Rex Ryan’s words were twisted earlier this week to make it seem like he was taking a shot at the Giants. Now it’s the words of Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks receiving attention.

When asked if Darrelle Revis was the best CB in football, Nicks responded by calling him a “decent corner.”

His explanation was expected — why should he subordinate himself?

Fellow receiver Victor Cruz was less inclined to praise the All-Pro defensive back.

“Teams aren’t really scared anymore,” Victor Cruz said of Revis. “He’s got to earn his money this year. Teams aren’t really backing down. I feel like we’re going to do the same thing. We’re going to go out until he physically stops us and we’re going to spread the ball around.”

The Giants have plenty of good receivers, so it makes sense for them to continue throwing the ball the way they have been. And Revis, despite still being very good, hasn’t been as lock-down as he was two years ago. What Cruz said wasn’t a shot at Revis — it was just a fact.

Cruz, though, doesn’t appreciate his name appearing in headlines. “Please understand the media takes excerpts of my conversation to make a story. I don’t talk trash,” he wrote on Twitter.

All the talk will be over in a few days, and the teams will be able to settle matters on the field. I have a feeling the media has made things appear more personal between the teams than it really is.
