Chip Caray had a regrettable misspeak during Saturday’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds.
In the fourth inning of the game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Mo., Caray (who is the play-by-play man for the Cardinals on FanDuel Sports Network) was reading off a promo about St. Louis’ upcoming Disability Pride Night on July 10. Caray was attempting to describe the disability flag that will be featured on the free cap giveaway for fans that night.
But instead of saying “disability pride flag,” Caray accidentally used an anti-gay slur instead. While Caray quickly corrected himself, the situation was still extremely awkward, especially since the broadcast then proceeded to go into over 30 seconds of silence from there.
Here is the video.

Caray, 60, has been in sports broadcasting for over three-and-a-half decades now. The son of late former Atlanta Braves announcer Skip Caray as well as the grandson of late Hall of Fame announcer Harry Caray, Chip has been the Cardinals’ play-by-play man since 2023 (after previously calling games for the Braves, Cubs, and Mariners).
Saturday’s game between the Cardinals and Reds (which the former won by a 6-5 final score) concluded without Chip addressing the on-air incident any further. But the gaffe had many thinking back to ex-Athletics announcer Glen Kuiper, who was actually fired in 2023 over a similar on-air misspeak.
