Rory McIlroy files for divorce from wife Erica Stoll
Rory McIlroy has filed for a divorce from his wife Erica Stoll.
TMZ reported on Tuesday that McIlroy filed divorce paperwork in Florida on Monday. The golfer’s manager told TMZ that McIlroy would not be commenting on the personal news and that they are aiming to make the process “as respectful and amicable as possible.”
McIlroy, 35, first met Stoll in 2012 when she was working the Ryder Cup and helped arrange a police escort to get him to the golf course. They began dating in 2014 and got engaged in 2015. The two were married in 2017 and had their first and only child together — daughter Poppy in 2020.
No clear reason was given for the divorce filing.
Prior to his marriage to Stoll, McIlroy had dated and was engaged to former No. 1 women’s tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. McIlroy broke up with Wozniacki via a telephone call after their wedding invitations had already been sent out.
Both McIlroy and Wozniacki eventually moved on, got married to new people, and had children. But now it looks like McIlroy’s first marriage will be coming to an end.
