Scottie Scheffler may have found creative way to make light of his arrest

It has been nearly a year since Scottie Scheffler was arrested during a surreal incident outside the PGA Championship, and many people are convinced the World No. 1 golfer found a clever way to make light of the situation this week.

Scheffler had an interesting wardrobe selection on Wednesday for his practice round ahead of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C. He wore a burnt orange golf shirt with a black vest over it.

Scheffler is a University of Texas alum, so burnt orange is the primary color of his alma mater. What is interesting, however, is that he does not wear that color very often.

Clare Rogers of GOLF.com scanned through a full year’s worth of Scheffler’s photos on Getty Images and could not find one other instance where he wore burnt orange at a golf tournament. The last time Scheffler wore the color for a public photo, according to Rogers, is when he was forced to change into a jumpsuit following his May 2024 arrest at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

That led to a theory that Scheffler chose to wear orange because this week marks the one-year anniversary of his arrest.

Again, it is entirely possible that Scheffler simply wanted to wear Longhorns colors and the timing was a coincidence. That would be a lot less fun.

Scheffler was arrested on May 17, 2024 outside of Valhalla while police were redirecting traffic after a pedestrian was struck by a passenger shuttle and killed. Scheffler was unaware of what had happened and was trying to enter the golf club despite being redirected by police. He ended up allegedly dragging a police officer who was hanging onto the golfer’s car.

Scheffler had been charged with reckless driving, criminal mischief, and second degree assault of a police officer. Scheffler said the entire ordeal was a misunderstanding, and prosecutors eventually agreed and dropped the charges.

If Scheffler did not want to remind fans of his arrest this week, he chose the wrong color to wear during his practice round.
