Washington Capitals fans chanted in support of suspended forward Tom Wilson during the team’s season opener.
Wednesday evening was a special night in Washington DC. The Capitals raised their Stanley Cup championship banner and then went out and beat the Boston Bruins 7-0.
Earlier in the day, the Capitals received some not-so-good news. Forward Tom Wilson was handed a 20-game suspension by the NHL for an illegal check to the head of Oskar Sundqvist of the St. Louis Blues during a preseason game last Sunday.

During Wednesday’s game, Capitals fans started a “free Tom Wilson” chant.

Wilson’s suspension is the longest handed down by the league since 2015. Wilson also received a three-game suspension during the postseason for a hit on Zach Aston-Reese.
Without their enforcer on the ice, Boston’s Brad Marchand seemed to pick on Lars Eller with a fight in the third period.
