Peter Chiarelli fired by Edmonton Oilers
The long nightmare of Edmonton Oilers is finally over.
The Oilers fired President/GM Peter Chiarelli late on Tuesday night. The news came after the Oilers lost 3-2 at home to the Detroit Red Wings for their third straight defeat. The Oilers sit 12th in the Western Conference standings, in position to miss the playoffs for the second straight season.
Chiarelli was in his fourth season with the downtrodden franchise. They were bad in his first year but had a 103-point season in his second that culminated with a second-round appearance in the playoffs. The Oilers missed the playoffs last year and are in position to do so again this season.
Though he didn’t screw up the draft pick of Connor McDavid, he made several other moves that have not paid off. He has traded Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, and his signing of Milan Lucic — a favorite from his Boston days — has been a bust. There have been running jokes about all the good players he’s sent away.
If Peter Chiarelli decided to not make any moves in the past 4 years, the @EdmontonOilers would roster a Top 6 something like this… pic.twitter.com/TBuN8Q0rXe
