Abby Wambach reportedly flipped car in 2014, fled scene

Retired U.S. women’s soccer star Abby Wambach was reportedly involved in a frightening car accident in 2014 that very few people found out about.

Wambach, who was arrested last month for driving while under the influence, was the driver of a Range Rover that crashed in Oregon and landed overturned on a residential property. TMZ Sports has learned that a witness called 911 shortly after the accident and told the dispatcher that the driver of the car had left the scene.

A representative from the Portland Police Department told TMZ that the vehicle was registered to Wambach, and police went to her home and found her. Wambach claimed she had decided to leave her car and take the one-mile walk to her home because she didn’t have her cell phone with her and wanted to call a tow truck. It was unclear why she didn’t ask for help rather than walking so far and leaving the car on someone’s front lawn.

Wambach’s SUV caused damage to a residential yard, but police said they had no reason to believe she was impaired. She was never charged with a crime despite leaving the scene of an accident. Portland PD insists the officer who spoke with Wambach did not know who she was and gave her no preferential treatment. They also helped put her in touch with the owner of the home where the crash took place so Wambach could pay for the damages.

Obviously, the incident sounds more suspicious now that Wambach has a DUI on her record. It’s fair to wonder why someone would choose to walk a mile home and leave their overturned car just because they didn’t have a cell phone to call a tow truck.

Between the recent Wambach news and everything that has gone on with Hope Solo, the U.S. women’s team has dealt with its fair share of drama.
