Hope Solo suspended 30 days by US Soccer

Hope Solo

Hope Solo has been suspended from the U.S. women’s national team for 30 days, US Soccer announced on Wednesday.

The organization says the suspension is due to Solo’s involvement in an embarrassing event.

“During our current National Team camp, Hope made a poor decision that has resulted in a negative impact on U.S. Soccer and her teammates,” coach Jill Ellis said in a statement. “We feel at this time it is best for her to step away from the team.”

The event happened Monday morning when Solo was in the car with her husband, Jerramy Stevens, who was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Solo was said to have been acting belligerently during the arrest and came close to being arrested for disorderly conduct.

During her 30-day suspension, Solo will not be allowed to train with the national team, which is currently holding training camp in Carson, Calif. She will also miss February matches against France and England.

“I accept and respect the Federation’s decision, and more importantly, I apologize for disappointing my teammates, coaches and the Federation who have always supported me. I think it’s best for me to take a break, decompress from the stress of the last several months, and come back mentally and physically ready to positively contribute to the team,” Solo said in a statement on her Facebook page.

Though the organization says the suspension has to do with a “poor decision” during training camp, you have to wonder whether it is due to a multitude of events. Solo recently faced domestic violence charges and there was public pressure for her to be suspended before the charges were eventually dropped. Maybe US Soccer decided it had had enough of Solo embarrassing the team and decided to group the two incidents together when it decided on a punishment.
