Ecuadorian soccer fan Christian Calvache reportedly killed for refusing to share beer

A Liga de Quito soccer fan from Ecuador died earlier this week from brain trauma during a match. The fan, 26-year-old Christian Calvache, reportedly suffered a “severe head injury” after another fan punched him in the head and he fell, hitting his head on the grandstand seats. According to a translation of the story from Terra.com, the victim’s brother says Calvache was punched by the opposing fan because he refused to let him have a sip of his beer.

The man who threw the punch has reportedly been identified, but his name has not been revealed.

Unfortunately, Calvache’s death is part of a recent pattern of violence having to do with soccer matches in South America. Not only have fans been attacked by fans of opposing teams, but also ones from the same team. Instances like this one can truly never be understood.
