Switzerland was this close to taking Argentina to penalty kicks
Switzerland gave Argentina all they could handle in the round of 16 on Tuesday, forcing extra time and coming just inches away from having to settle the game with penalty kicks. With less than three minutes remaining in extra time, Switzerland midfielder Blerim Dzemaili hit the post with a header that would have tied the game at 1-1.
After his header rattled off the post, Dzemaili had a shot at the rebound but couldn’t react in time. The cross was perfect and the scoring attempt was about two inches away from being the same.
Argentina took the lead in the 118th minute on a goal from Angel Di Maria that was set up by — you guessed it — Lionel Messi.
Several favorites have been challenged in the round of 16, but none have been upset to this point. The United States will try to change that against Belgium on Tuesday afternoon.
