There are good athletic genes in the Brady family, and that special DNA apparently has trickled down to Tom’s niece.
Maya Brady, a the niece of Tom Brady, is a freshman at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, Calif., and she already has emerged as a softball star.
Brady is batting .391 with seven doubles, two triples, a home run, 12 RBIs and a team-best 30 runs scored this season for Oaks. She has been one of the key pieces in helping Oaks Christian post a 27-1-1 record and become recognized as one of the top programs in the country. Not too bad for a freshman.
Brady is so talented that she has already committed to play college ball at UCLA, which will help her have the chance to begin making more of a name for herself.
“Given the athletes in the family, it’s definitely hard to make your mark. It’s hard to pass up someone who wins the Super Bowl,” Brady told the Ventura County Star in a profile about her. “But hopefully in the future I can make my own mark and say look what I did in my career.”
Not only will it be tough to live up to what uncle Tom has done in his career, but Maya’s mother, Maureen, was also an incredibly accomplished athlete.
Maureen Brady, who is the oldest of four with Tom the youngest, was an absolute star pitcher for Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, Calif., for whom she went 110-10 with 29 no-hitters and 14 perfect games, per The Star. She went on to become an All-America pitcher at Fresno State, where she went 80-31 with a 0.98 ERA and helped lead the team to the College World Series twice.
Although he has his career with the New England Patriots to worry about, Tom keeps up with Maya’s career and tries to follow softball. We were actually at a UCLA game five years ago when Tom was there with Maureen and her two daughters, including Maya.
Perhaps the visits to watch the Bruins made an impression on Maya, who eventually committed to UCLA. Maya got a lot of notice from colleges at a young age by playing on the travel ball circuit with the OC Batbusters, one of the nation’s top programs. Tom is such a softball fan thanks to Maya and Maureen that he even knows some of the top club programs.
