Lamar Odom will undoubtedly be feeling some strong emotions this week as the birthday of his late son once again passes, and that is reportedly one of the reasons the former NBA star decided to check himself back into a rehab facility.
Odom’s son, Jayden, was born on Dec. 15, 2005. He tragically died from SIDS the following June. According to TMZ, Odom’s son’s death was the primary reason the 37-year-old began using drugs, and he feared he might use again on or around Jayden’s birthday.
Odom is also said to be upset over the fact that his divorce from Khloe Kardashian was recently finalized.
This will be Odom’s second trip to rehab after his first stint in 2012 ultimately failed. The former Los Angeles Laker is aiming to remain at a facility in San Diego for 60 days. E! News reported earlier in the week that Odom has “not fallen off the wagon,” but an ESPN reporter who knows Odom painted a much more disturbing picture recently.
Obviously, Odom has been through a lot in his life. Here’s hoping his latest stay in rehab puts him on the right path.
Lamar Odom is still battling addiction, and the former NBA star has reportedly decided to give rehab another try.
According to E! News, Odom made the decision on his own to check into a rehab facility in San Diego recently.
“It was his own decision. He wanted to work on his mental and physical health for the next chapter of his life,” a source told the gossip publication. “He has not fallen off the wagon, but he understands the importance of maintaining his sobriety.”
It has been more than a year since Odom suffered a stroke and nearly lost his life during a drug and alcohol-fueled weekend at a brothel in Nevada. Over the summer, we heard a report that Odom’s family tried to stage an intervention that did not go well. There were even more disturbing rumors about things that were found scattered about his home, and Odom has since finalized his divorce with Khloe Kardashian.
It is interesting that the E! News report claims Odom has “not fallen off the wagon,” as an ESPN reporter who knows Odom recently painted a much more disturbing picture of how the former Laker has been living his life.
Odom is truly fortunate to be alive, and we’re glad to hear he is at least trying to help himself remain on the right path.
There was a short period of time recently where Lamar Odom seemed to be heading down the right path. He attended a game as a guest of Kobe Bryant back in March and was again spotted at Kobe’s final game a month later. Unfortunately, there has been no positive news since.
On his podcast “The Lowe Post” this week, ESPN’s Zach Lowe asked colleague Ramona Shelburne if she has any updates on Odom’s health. Shelburne said she has heard very little, and what little she has heard does not sound good.
“Everything I’ve heard the last two or three months is that he is back doing all the stuff that got him into this in the first place,” Shelburne said. “I call people and say, ‘Have you heard from Lamar, do you know what’s going on?’ And they say, ‘Yeah, he’s battling the demons again and he’s back with the same old crew.’ It’s really sad.”
It has been more than a year since Odom overdosed at a brothel in Nevada and nearly lost his life. As Shelburne noted, those close to the former NBA star hoped that incident would be rock bottom, but Odom continues to struggle with addiction.
Over the summer, we heard a report that Odom’s family tried to stage an intervention that did not go well. There were even more disturbing rumors about things that were found scattered about his home, and Odom has since finalized his divorce with Khloe Kardashian.
Odom already suffered brain damage as a result of his drug-induced stroke. If he can’t get his drug problem under control, there’s no telling what the future holds.
Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom are finally getting close to officially ending their marriage.
According to a report from TMZ, Kardashian and Odom have reached a settlement and signed off on their divorce. Both filed legal documents on Friday after reaching a property settlement and are waiting for a judge to approve them.
Kardashian first filed for divorce in 2013, but there have been various events that resulted in the process not being finalized. Khloe vowed to stay with Odom last year to help him get back on his feet when he nearly died of a drug overdose, and she even rented a home for him near hers for some time. Kardashian filed once again this year, supposedly telling Odom that she wants to move on and start a family with someone else.
The timing of the filing is interesting, as a gossip publication recently reported that Kardashian is now engaged to the NBA player she has been dating for a few months. Perhaps that is why things are finally moving along with her divorce from Odom.

In his first season as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, Luke Walton wants to throw it back to the days when he used to play for the team.
On Saturday, Walton commented on Jordan Clarkson’s role for the coming season, drawing a comparison to the way the Lakers brought Lamar Odom off the bench in the past.
Luke Walton compared Jordan Clarkson coming off the bench to Lamar Odom: "It's like mixing a starter with the second unit."
— Los Angeles Lakers (@Lakers) October 8, 2016
Clarkson has indeed come off the bench in both of the team’s preseason games so far with Walton appearing to be committed to having former Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams in the starting lineup. It’s a strategy that’s at least worth a try given Clarkson’s advantage over Williams in creating offense for others. It’s also one with a noted track record of success as Walton observed with Odom during their time as teammates on the Lakers. After being a starter for virtually his entire NBA career to that point, Odom was brought off the bench from the 2008-09 season onwards and not only earned his own Sixth Man of the Year Award out of it but helped the team capture back-to-back championships in that role as well.
While title aspirations are pretty far out of the grasp of the Lakers this season, Walton will be hoping to create a similar impact by having Clarkson, the third-year guard, carry the second unit. Breaking up The Swag Bros will be difficult, but Walton will still have the option of closing out games with Clarkson on the floor, so it should be a viable capacity for the 24-year-old to function in.
Lamar Odom walked out on his family’s attempt at an intervention last week, but that is not stopping those close to him from trying to convince the former NBA star to seek professional help.
According to a report from Extra, Odom’s family is searching for “additional options to present to him” that might convince him to go to rehab now that their intervention attempt failed. Odom’s cousin, Alvina Alston, is reportedly working with former MLB player Darryl Strawberry to find an in-patient care facility in the New York City area so Odom can stay close to his friends, family and children. The family is described as being “fully committed” to getting Odom to accept help.
As we learned previously, Odom’s family was trying to get him to go to a rehab facility in Florida that is run by Strawberry. Odom was supposedly surprised to see everyone confronting him on Friday night and responded by walking out.
A professional addiction and recovery specialist who was trying to help Odom’s family with the intervention believes there is one friend who is holding Odom back from getting the help he needs.
Earlier this month, Odom reportedly had to be removed from an airplane for a disturbing reason. He’s clearly at a very dangerous point in his life just eight months after he nearly lost his life to a drug overdose.
Lamar Odom is said to have resorted to some of his old ways just eight months after he nearly died of a drug overdose, and one person who is familiar with Odom’s situation believes the former NBA star is being held back by a friend.
Ron Dock, a certified addiction and recovery specialist who was called upon by Odom’s family for help, explained on Monday what went wrong when Odom walked out of an intervention attempt in New York over the weekend.
“The main focus was going to be his son and daughter. I had them write letters and they were going to submit the letters to their father explaining their feelings about his behavior,” Dock told Derrick Bryson Taylor of Page Six. “It was all set in place until this negative energy came. For [his friend’s] own selfish motives, sabotage the intervention.”
Dock claims an unnamed friend who grew up with Odom intentionally thwarted the intervention attempt.
“I think some people want people around you to keep you sick so they can get what they want from you,” he said. “I believe this is the case here. I think this guy just kept us away from (Odom). He’s a very ugly person. If anything happens to Lamar, I would blame that energy right there.”
Dock runs two treatment facilities in Florida along with former MLB star Darryl Strawberry, who was ready to join the intervention via video chat. Odom never gave those close to him a chance to be heard.
As we shared with you previously, Odom has been kicked out of the house Khloe Kardashian was renting for him and was recently removed from an airplane for a disturbing reason. He’s obviously very much in need of help, and Dock said he hopes Odom becomes open to receiving it “before he dies.”
